Family of five photographed on the open sand below the bluffs in Carlsbad, San Diego County

North county coastline with room to spread out and light that lasts.

Why Carlsbad works

Carlsbad is the most photographed stretch of coast I shoot, and the reason is variety. Layered sandstone bluffs, sea grass along the top, cobble at the tide line, and long runs of open sand between them. A single walk gives three completely different backdrops.

It also gives you space. The beach is wide enough that a group of twelve can stand without anyone else in the frame, and the bluffs block the wind that makes other beaches uncomfortable. Families, maternity, newborns, and couples all sit well here.

Sessions that fit Carlsbad

Families and reunions

The wide beach holds a large group cleanly, and the bluff behind you gives the frame a backdrop instead of empty sky. Cobble, tide pools, and open sand keep younger kids busy while I work.

Maternity and newborn

Wet sand mirrors the sunset, and the bluffs give shelter from the wind. Short walks from the parking lot keep late pregnancy and first outings manageable.

Beach boudoir and glamour

This is the one beach on my list where boudoir really works. A swimsuit, or a dress you love, photographed at sunset. It leans glamour and pinup rather than lingerie, and the shoreline empties out in the last hour of light.

Planning your Carlsbad photo session

Best time of day

The last 75 minutes before sunset. The coast faces west, so the light comes straight in and the wet sand does half the work.

Tides and beach access

Low tide opens the wide sand and the reflections; high tide pushes everyone up against the cobble. I check the tide chart against your date and pick the access point from there.

What to wear

Cream, sand, dusty blue, and soft rust. Long dresses move well in the onshore breeze, and bare feet photograph better than shoes full of sand.

Wind, marine layer, and stairs

Bring a layer; the coast runs cooler than inland at any time of year. Overcast is fine and often better. Most beach access here involves a stairway, so tell me ahead if that is a problem and I will pick a ramped entry.

Carlsbad session questions

How long is the session?

Family sessions run 60 minutes. Couples and portrait sessions run 30 minutes. Elopement and wedding coverage starts at two hours. Boudoir runs 60 minutes or more, depending on the location and the style you are after. Newborn sessions also run 60 minutes, but they are photographed indoors, at the studio or in your home.

When will we get our photos?

For most sessions your finished gallery is delivered within 72 hours through a private online gallery.

Is Carlsbad better than Oceanside?

They are different, not better. Oceanside gives you the pier pilings; Carlsbad gives you bluffs, cobble, and more open sand. Tell me the look you want and I will pick between them.

Can we get sandy and wet?

Please do. Bring a towel and a change for the kids and we will use the water line properly instead of keeping everyone back on dry sand.
